Search for metal fabricators in London and you’ll find hundreds ofMetal Fabricators names, from one-man welding vans to workshops outside the M25 that promise to deliver anywhere. On paper, they all make gates, railings, stairs and steelwork. In practice, London jobs have their own problems, and most of them have nothing to do with welding.

At East London Metal Engineering Ltd, we run our workshop from Arch 379, Station Road, in Forest Gate, E7. Here’s what we’ve learned about why metalwork in London goes right or wrong, and what a local fabricator does differently.

London buildings are never square

A lot of London’s housing stock is over a century old. Walls lean, floors slope, and openings that look identical on a terrace can differ by several centimetres from house to house.

That’s why fabricating purely from drawings or customer measurements often fails here. A balustrade made to the architect’s plan arrives 30mm too long, because the parapet was never built exactly to the plan. A gate made from “rough measurements” leaves a gap at the hinge side.

A local fabricator can visit, measure the actual opening, check levels, and spot problems like a crumbling pier or a hollow wall before anything is made. That one site visit prevents most of the costly mistakes we’re called in to fix.

Access decides the design

In London, how something gets into the building often matters as much as what it is.

  • A one-piece steel beam won’t go up a narrow Victorian staircase.
  • A spiral stair might need to be built in sections to get through a standard door.
  • A large gate on a red route may need a delivery slot, a parking suspension, or a very early start.
  • A basement restaurant kitchen canopy may have to come down a steep service stair.

Good London fabricators design around access from day one: splitting items into bolt-together sections, planning lifts, and timing deliveries around traffic and parking rules. A workshop that has never delivered to a terraced street in Hackney or a parade of shops in Ilford tends to learn this the hard way, on your project.

Real examples: what London jobs actually look like

These are recent jobs our customers have described in their Google reviews.

Converting two gates into one automated sliding gate. A commercial customer had two old palisade swing gates. We converted them into a single automated sliding gate, laying a ground track, connecting the electrics, fitting safety sensors and welding on site. We also installed a sliding gate motor with app-based access control. The customer reported that the whole job was finished in just over a day. Being local meant we could survey quickly, fabricate in our own workshop, and keep on-site disruption to a minimum.

Stainless steel for a mosque wudhu area. A masjid needed a hygienic, durable wudhu (ablution) area. That meant stainless steel seating, grilles and drainage built to fit the existing room, not standard catalogue units. The customer highlighted the fair price, on-time delivery and attention to detail.

Replacing railings and a gate for a building contractor. A local building services company used us to replace railings and a gate on a project. For contractors, a fabricator who turns up when promised and works neatly alongside other trades keeps the whole job on programme.

Rules that London metalwork has to meet

Metalwork in London often comes with paperwork:

  • Building Regulations for staircases, balustrades, balconies and guarding, including heights and gap sizes.
  • Building Control sign-off for structural steel in extensions and loft conversions.
  • Planning and conservation rules for railings, gates and visible metalwork, especially in conservation areas and on listed buildings.
  • Gate safety rules for automated gates, including safety edges, photocells and force testing.
  • Food hygiene requirements for commercial kitchen canopies and stainless fittings.

A London fabricator who deals with these every week will flag issues early: a balustrade that’s too low, a gate that would open over the pavement, a railing design the conservation officer won’t accept.

Aftercare is easier when you’re nearby

Metalwork isn’t always “fit and forget”. Automated gates need servicing. Shutters get damaged. Hinges drop. Railings get hit by cars.

When your fabricator is down the road, repairs and adjustments happen in days, not weeks. We offer maintenance contracts and on-site welding across London, so a problem can often be fixed on the spot rather than taken back to a workshop miles away.

What we make

From our East London workshop, we design, fabricate and install:

  • Gates and automated gate systems
  • Railings, balustrades, balconies and handrails
  • Internal, external and spiral staircases and fire escapes
  • Structural steelwork: beams, frames and supports
  • Metal fencing and security fencing
  • Metal doors, security grilles and roller shutters
  • Commercial kitchen canopies and stainless steel fittings
  • Bespoke, made-to-order metalwork

Every project goes through the same steps: site survey, CAD drawings and 3D visuals, in-house fabrication, galvanising or powder coating, then installation by our own team.

Working with East London Metal Engineering Ltd

If you’re comparing metal fabricators in London, start by sending each one the same thing: a few photos, rough measurements and a short description of what you need. Then notice who asks the right questions about access, levels, regulations and how the item will be used. That tells you more than any brochure.
