What Compliant Should Mean When Someone Quotes You
If an installer mentions compliance, here’s specifically what should be behind that word:
UKCA/CE marking and a Declaration of Conformity. This confirms the gate and its automation have been checked against UK safety law specifically the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008. If an installer can’t produce this document for your job, that’s a red flag, not a technicality.

A gate installed next to a school run, a shared driveway, or a footpath needs different safety provisions than one on a private rural drive with no passing foot traffic. If nobody has assessed your actual site, the “safety features” are generic, not yours.

The Installer Question Almost Nobody Asks
You’ll ask about price. You’ll probably ask about lead time. Here’s the question that actually separates a good job from a future headache: who is doing the risk assessment, and are they trained to DHF standard?
The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) sets the recognised training benchmark for gate installers in the UK. Ask directly whether the engineers on your job are DHF-trained, whether they’ll provide a written risk assessment specific to your property, and whether you’ll receive a Declaration of Conformity once the work’s done. A confident installer will have answers ready. A vague answer, or a shrug, tells you everything you need to know before you sign anything.
It’s also worth asking what happens if the site turns out to be more complicated than expected sloped ground, buried services, a boundary that isn’t quite where the deeds say it is. Installers who do proper site surveys and CAD planning before fabrication catch these issues early. Installers working from a phone photo and a rough measurement tend to find out on installation day, which is a far more expensive place to discover a problem.
Your Responsibility Doesn’t End at Handover
This part surprises a lot of gate owners: compliance isn’t a one-off event that happens on installation day. Under UK regulations, the property owner has an ongoing legal duty to keep the gate’s safety features working correctly not just the installer.
